Columns series

The Columns series emerged through trials with materials, looking for interesting forms that might be developed from an individual materials’ structural capabilities.  In this series various forms of widely available thread become the components for structures that occupy spaces ranging from small boxes to large halls.

Each form is introduced individually, connecting with the farthest expanses of the space and building up a group in the central space. The forms bring a sense of presence to a visually empty void, making it measurable and tangible and creating relationships of form and space, along with the dynamics of individuals and groups. The series is focused particularly on the experience of three-dimensionality gained through the shifting sense of depth and spatial geometry as the viewer moves around the work.

The series continually evolves, having started with single columns containing clusters of smaller columns, then moving to individual columns within open groups and more recently to satellite versions which emerges when the top threads of the structure are highlighted rather than the lower section.
