Dendrites - 2009-2014
The dendrite process introduced form into spaces, building up simple Y-shaped elements into dense structures. The forms were emergent and were developed in response to the spaces they occupy.

Created in two phases, the initial phase introduced a white thread structure into the space. Once completed, a pathway of lines was painted red. This refocused attention, changing the perception of the piece from an immersive, white lattice structure to an object-like form, suspended in the space. It also created a generational form, with the visible, but now underlying, white structure supporting the emergent lightning shape.

A dendrite form was introduced into the space over the course of a one-day colloquium. The addition of each Y-shaped form was photographed, printed and posted on the wall so people at the event could follow progress as the form was built up. At the end of the day the installation hosted an informal dance session after which is was cut down in front of the audience, sharing the rapid reversion from density to void.

The Dendrites at Mme Lillies exhibition used the large street-facing window of the gallery to share the development of the form with people passing by. Single Y-strands were added every few days over a two week period, and progress could also be viewed on webcam. In this way the work was gradually embedded into the space rather arriving as a finished object, making the journey of gradual changes - in both the form and the sense of space - a vital part of the work.
